Silence of the Lambs

Silence of the Lambs directed by Jonathan Demme is one of the greatest movies of all time. In this film, young F.B.I agent Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster, seeks help from Dr. Hannibal Lecter who is cannibalistic serial killer. Clarice and the F.B.I are trying to capture another serial killer known as “Buffalo Bill” who skins female bodies. During the film we see the sick mind of Dr. Lecter and how he is the killer that we thought he was. Clarice goes on the hunt to find this “Buffalo Bill” and the victims he has taken.

I really enjoyed this movie and thought that it was well done. All older movies like this have very simple and interesting shots. When Clarice was talking to Dr. Lecter in his cell they would angle the camera lower on him to make him seem scarier and powerful. The only thing I don't like about older movies is that the story lines move so slow and aren’t very entertaining. Since they move so slow, it can come off as confusing. I was very confused about the anagram part when Dr. Lecter talks about ‘Louis Friend”. Also why would F.B.I agents trust a serial killer so much. Almost all the information that he gave her seemed false or a trick to just get what he wants. I understand that it’s the point of the movie but when they don’t make the points very clear then it just seems pointless to even talk about him. I really enjoyed the lighting in the movie and how the darker light provided such a deeper meaning. It would only be dark when they were in the room with Dr. Lector and when Clarice finds Buffalo Bill, he shuts off the lights. It’s hard to make a simple movie scary and Demme was really able to capture the little parts. For example when Clarice was talking through the prison, all of the other prisoners were really scary and gave a different view of the movie. People like this are real and it isn’t something to take lightly.

I would only recommend this film to someone who likes watching slower movies and can handle creepy not scary. It’s funny how it’s considered a horror film when there’s nothing that scary. It’s just a realistic and creepy film showing how serial killers feel and react. This film also shows how old films are so different from today’s films. It’s slower and more appreciative of a good storyline. This is good and bad depending on the person watching. I think anyone who takes serial killers seriously and wants to watch a great film then this is for you.
